You may have heard of “jamsu”, the Korean makeup trend that gives you long-lasting matte skin in seconds. I challenged myself and put it to the test and found the pros and cons that come with this technique.
What Is “Jamsu?” exactly“Jamsu,” which translates into “submerge,” consists of basic steps such as, patting handfuls of baby powder/ translucent powder on your face after you put on your primer, foundation, and concealer ( well not in that particular order). Then you plunge your entire face into a sink or bowl filled with cool/ ice water for 15 to 30 seconds. Thereafter, you pat dry with a towel and finish the rest of your makeup. The result is perfectly matte skin that lasts all day.
I gave this technique a trial shot last week to see if the results were really worth the buzz. I chose a weekday so I can test its mattifying super powers throughout the workday plus a late dinner out with a group of family and friends.
Here is, what I did, what I learned, and my final thoughts.

The Process
I completed my daily bible morning skin care routine, I applied an air-whipped mousse foundation, one that I knew is neither long-lasting nor matte, nor will stay put all day without a touch-up . I also applied a little bit of concealer here and there, to all my marks. Then I took heavy handfuls of baby powder (used the original Jamsu instructions, of using baby powder) and applied it with a clean cushioned puff. You can use your hands, a makeup sponge, or a brush, depending on your preference.

Tip: The powder process is pretty messy, so never ever attempt “jamsu” wearing black clothes. Also remember to use a headband to protect your hair from getting wet or dirty.
The “Diving” Part:
Yes, literally diving into a bowl of cool water. The drier your natural skin is, the less you should stay with your face submerged underwater—no more than 30 seconds, even if you have combination to oily skin type. Since I have normal to combination skin, I held it there for 25 seconds.

I made sure that all the areas where I applied powder were actually submerged. This included the sides of my face and the area near my ears. Once I finished submerging, I used my face cloth to pat my skin dry.
Immediate Results:
My skin didn’t feel tight at all, but boy oh boy did I look pale! Luckily, I didn’t see clear streaks of baby powder left on my face. Even though i was a bit washed up and washed out, I followed with my normal makeup routine and, by the end, my skin tone wasn’t bothering me anymore, it seemed more settled or my eyes seemed to have settled. But there were some dry patches on my face, especially around my temples and all the way from the corners of my lips to my chin.

I went to work, a full 9 hours and then out to dinner with family and friends and, 16 hours later, I finally returned home.
Final Thoughts:
So, my final thoughts are, drum roll... My skin still looked fine, it was acceptable for being 16 hour old makeup, it was not perfect, but it was good enough. After all, it was an extremely long day and I guess that “jamsu-ing” definitely made my makeup last longer. It gave me very matte skin, which by 2pm is normally shiny or glowing from oil, for sure. My biggest surprise was actually being able to see a little bit of blush on my cheeks, and the highlighter didn't become faded by my shiny face, this is usually the first things to disappear from my face!

For the “flawless skin” part of the “jamsu” promise, my skin ended up looking a bit cakey and feeling tight during the day, I guess these things don’t exactly spell out “flawless skin,” do they? I even sprayed some hydrating mist on top to see if it would get any better, which it did make it more comfortable.
Removing my makeup before going to bed didn’t feel any different. There’s nothing double cleansing can’t take care of! I think that this beauty trick would work better for someone with combination to oily skin who really appreciates completely matte skin, rather than a person with dry skin. With drier skin they might have flaking during the day and the skin could dehydrate faster leaving them looking like old concrete. I will try a “spot version” of this Korean trend, applying baby powder only on my T-zone, and see how rewarding it is. I'll be sure to share that experience with you soon.
